E6 Error on Voltas Air Conditioner: Meaning, Causes & Fix
The E6 error on a Voltas air conditioner means the indoor unit has lost communication with the outdoor unit — the indoor control board isn't receiving a feedback signal from the outdoor board over the connecting signal wire. It typically shows up as the indoor unit running normally for two to three minutes, then stopping and flashing E6 on the display, while the outdoor unit never starts or cuts out with it.
What E6 Actually Means
A split AC has two separate control boards — one in the indoor unit, one in the outdoor unit — that constantly exchange signals over the wiring that runs between them. E6 is Voltas' code for when that exchange breaks down: the indoor board sends a signal and gets no reply, so it shuts the unit down as a safety measure rather than running the compressor blind.
This is different from a cooling or gas-related fault. With E6, the electrical and control system is the problem — not the refrigerant charge, not the coils.
Common Causes of E6
- Loose or corroded wiring at the terminal block — the signal wire connecting indoor and outdoor units sits at screw terminals on both ends, and vibration or moisture over time can loosen or corrode these connections.
- Physical damage to the signal wire — cuts, rodent damage, or wear where the cable runs through a wall sleeve or along an outdoor wall.
- Unstable input voltage — voltage spikes or sags, common on weaker local supply lines, can disrupt the communication signal even when the wiring itself is fine.
- A faulty control board — if the indoor or outdoor PCB itself has a failed component on the communication circuit, no amount of wiring or power fixes will resolve it.
What to Check Before Calling a Technician
- Power-cycle the unit. Turn the AC off at the wall switch and at the MCB/circuit breaker, wait about five minutes, then switch back on. This clears a one-off signal glitch, though it won't fix a genuine wiring or board fault.
- Check the outdoor unit's terminal block. Open the service cover and look for a loose, corroded, or discoloured (heat-damaged) connection where the signal wire terminates.
- Check the indoor unit's terminal block the same way, behind the front panel.
- Inspect the visible run of cable between the two units for cuts, chew marks, or crushed sections, especially where it passes through the wall sleeve.
- Note if the error returns immediately after a reset, or only after a few minutes of running — immediate recurrence points more strongly toward a board fault than a wiring issue.
When It's the PCB, Not the Wiring
If the terminals are tight, the wire is undamaged, and the voltage is stable, but E6 keeps coming back, the fault is very likely on one of the two control boards — most often the outdoor unit's board, since that's the side more exposed to moisture, heat, and voltage spikes. This isn't something to keep resetting past; running a compressor on a board that's failing intermittently risks damaging the compressor itself over time.
At that point the fix is testing and repairing (or replacing) the specific board — usually far cheaper than it sounds, since only the small control board is at fault, not the compressor or the rest of the unit.
